“The Well” Diffuser

Design of underground diffuser; two ∅35′ diameter disk and 135 ft high. All shipped in small pieces to site and assembled with minimal welding.

About this Project

Downtown Toronto is heated and cooled with a thermal fluid.  “The Well” allows the fluid to be stored as well as regulate or control the fluid temperture. It is located in a cavern beneath a high-rise building in Toronto.

The Diffuer’s are ∅35′ in diameter and 135 ft high with ∅24′ piping, all fabricated off site and bolted together in the cavern.  Temperature reversed of up to 100° F.

1500+ bolts and only 2 holes had to be opened up.  Assembly and installation took 2 weeks.

Modified tower crane sections supported the diffuser disks and additional and bracing to accommodate the lateral forces introduced by thermal expansion of the supply & return pipes. Objective Engineering designed unique horizontal bracing  joints and connections to properly distribute the extra loads to prevent crushing of piping, maintain lateral stability and to easily install the bracing in a years’ time when the concrete walls will be placed.

Structural building modifications of a 150-year old timber building for a new man-lift.

About this Project

A new elevator was required to be installed in an old wood-frame building used by a milling company.  The seven floors and the existing roof was structurally reviewed for the elevator opening.  The floor is wooden and supported by concrete beams.

Original structural drawings were not available so a site visit was performed to assess the structure, review the concept with client and gather measurements so that design drawings could be prepared.

There were existing openings in the floors that were closed in.  These required modifications and additional supports were designed to suit the new elevator. An enclosed opening was required in the roof structure to provide the required clearance above the elevator for maintenance access and to suit TSSA requirements.

About this Project

Retrofitting older buildings in the tight landscape of Toronto requires equipment to be lifted to the roofs of large buildings with minimal impact on traffic flow and road closures.  To overcome this issue, our client mounts cranes on the rooftop for use during construction.  Equipment can then be raised without using a road crane that would block traffic for extended periods of time.

Our role was to design a structural steel support frame to mount the crane (Terex CDK 100-16) and design the shoring to safely support the crane and loads on the existing building structure.  The steel frame is designed in modular sections that can be brought up through the existing building or hoisted with a swing hoist and assembled on the rooftop using bolts. The crane is assembled and attached to the frame and the frame is attached to the building.

The shoring is installed below the steel frame contact points and distributes the load over a larger surface area to prevent damage to the building. Steel posts were used as the shoring support in conjunction with steel plates and threaded bars to hold them in place. The thread bar anchors are an actively tensioned anchor system which minimize or eliminate deformations.

Custom Stability Testing

This unique piece of equipment is not covered by any Provincial or Federal Regulation or CSA Standard.  A unique stability test procedure was required to be developed as well as a dielectric test criterion to protect the workers working on live power lines.

 

About this Project

A custom stability testing procedure was developed for a truck mounted insulated aerial device that is a mobile elevating work elevator (MEWP) with an articulating-boom mobile crane.  The unit has rail gear mounted for use on road and rail and has catenary maintenance service body.

The mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) and mobile articulating boom crane were tested separately and then together to determine the capacity of the unit.  Since the MEWP is mounted to a commercial truck chassis and required dielectric resistances, the unit was tested as per CSA C225-10 with the unit structurally meeting the intent of CSA B354.6-17.

There were various requirements for the platform position and work methods including allowing the unit to transit with the platform partially raised with a worker for the inspection of live power lines.  The unit required testing for use with and without the outriggers extended for use with the platform only or the crane only.  The outriggers must be fully deployed if the MEWP and crane are used in unison.

The test loads were suspended from the boom tip of the crane and from the bottom of the extended platform edge.  The unit was determined to be stable for 360° working radius.

During this stability test, the crane was derated for the various platform and elevation configurations as specified by the client.  A derated capacity and operation chart was produced.

About this Project

The Propane Railcar Offload Platform was designed so that each platform can support its own weight, 2 workers, load arm, gangway and pipes for liquid propane and air vents.

The main access stair and fixed access ladders were custom designed for the height of the platform.  The access stair was placed at the center of the platform for most efficient access point with the ladders at each end for emergency entry and exit from the platform.

The foundations were engineered for the platform using reinforced concrete and the main structure was designed using steel.  The gangway and load arms were designed and supplied by other contractors with the specific support requirements and loading information incorporated into our design. 

To ensure that the platforms cleared the rail line right-of-way and the foundations clear the existing services, a site survey and locate was performed along with consultation with the rail line owner and operators..

The client was provided with a sealed design and erection and fabrication drawings.

Site visits were performed to ensure proper installation and construction site review reports issued.
