Elevated Platform Stability Testing

Updated: Mar 25

The Challenge

Many modern light rail networks operate on a 750 VDC overhead catenary system. Regular inspection of these overhead power lines is essential for maintaining reliable service and preventing failures. However, conducting these inspections presents significant safety challenges due to the high voltages involved.

To address this need, Geismar North America Ltd. developed a specialized solution: a vehicle-mounted elevating work platform with an integrated pantograph inspection system. This equipment allows maintenance technicians to safely inspect the overhead catenary lines while they remain energized—eliminating the need for system-wide power shutdowns during routine inspections.

The Solution

Stability testing was performed by Objective Engineering Inc. to ensure compliance with stringent standards and regulations. After implementing the necessary modifications, the complete unit successfully met all CSA C225-20 Category E dielectric periodic test requirements. The successful deployment of this specialized inspection system demonstrates how innovative engineering solutions, when properly tested and certified, can enhance both safety and efficiency in critical infrastructure maintenance operations.

For transit systems worldwide, this approach to catenary inspection represents a model for balancing operational needs with stringent safety requirements—ensuring that public transportation remains both reliable and safe for years to come.
