The Challenge
Geismar faced the challenge of ensuring the stability and safe operation of their crane when equipped with a cold air blower, specifically in the context of different working configurations. The vehicle, a Freightliner 114SD chassis with a Rotobec Horizon 930-SP-MT25-SP crane, was equipped with a Modern Track Machinery CAB-3 cold air blower weighing 2,000 lb (904 kg). Geismar needed to verify that the crane, even with the additional load of the blower, could maintain stability when subjected to various operational conditions, including out-of-service scenarios and load rotations. This challenge involved ensuring the safety and operational reliability of the crane in these critical configurations, as the unit had to meet stringent Canadian National (CN) stability standards.
The Solution
Objective Engineering conducted a comprehensive stability test on the crane and its associated equipment. The test, which followed the CN Procedure standards, assessed the crane’s ability to handle a 2,400 lb test load (comprising the blower and an additional 400 lb load) under two key configurations: the test load in the working zone over the front with outriggers not deployed, and the test load rotated 360° with outriggers deployed. The crane passed the stability requirements, demonstrating that the crane could safely operate within the expected parameters.
